Taking a left in Albuquerque

A few weeks ago an interesting email floated into my world. Palo Alto School district was in search of a new photography instructor. Since work had been a little slow and I had just revamped my resume, I figured I'd send it on. I was met with great interest, interest led to an interview and now, I think today I will accept the offer.

The problem is, I have reservations - as with any career, I've become rather confident in my ability to orchestrate a photo shoot. I have a team of professionals I can call. I know where to get any gear I don't already have in my arsenal. I know the ropes, what to do if things go askew.

It's been a long time since I've been in High School. And although I've been working with the youth group at church, and I did teach middle schoolers in Colorado I'm going to be a little out of my element. Gunn High School is ranked in the top 100 schools in the country. (number 83 according to Newsweek) These kids are top notch - as is the staff. The bar is high.

Its really a win win situation, I've always wanted to teach. When I received my degree I never had any intention of becoming a commercial photographer. I was an artist, teaching would deliver a career that enabled me to pursue my art. But as they often do, paths don't quite take the direction you thought and here I am - 10 years later up to my ankles in marketing looking at turning right. I say a right turn because taking this position is a perfect segway - its part time so I won't be abandoning my other pursuits. I'll still be able to orchestrate the big shoots, and the salary from teach will allow me to forgo those jobs I didn't really want to take in the first place. I can hold out for the "big fish."

Now, the fun part will be being a part of a different world. And taking in a that amazing fresh energy, and channeling it into work, art and meaning.
